On Thursday,. Cheryl came to tell us that we were going to make zucchini latkes.in Culinary Art. Many of the children could relate to cooking with zucchini, as they had made zucchini muffins at home.
Cheryl asked,"Why do we use oil to make the latkes?"
The children thought about the question, and then they told Cheryl the Chanukah story.
Cheryl squeezed the liquid out of the zucchini. Several of the children tasted the zucchini juice.
Cheryl read the recipe to the class. This step helps to build auditory memory and sequencing skills.
Charlie and Cheryl measured a half cup of Parmesan cheese to add to the ingredients.
Max added the other half of cheese. At this point Cheryl stopped and asked the children what did a half of cup and a half of cup of cheese make. So we talked about halves and wholes.
James David added a cup of bread crumbs.
All the children smelled the fresh oregano that was part of the recipe.
We were ready to add the egg,but Cheryl stopped to talk to the children about how the egg would change the consistency of the ingredients.
In went the eggs, and the children are observing the changes to the dry ingredients.
Cheryl mixed all the ingredients.
The latkes sizzled in the oil. The children said," Our latkes are popping!"
