Making A Texas Salsa!

On Thursday, we went to Culinary Arts where Cheryl had all the fresh ingredients to make a colorful salsa. Since we have been studying Texas, Cheryl thought that the children would enjoy making this healthy and delicious recipe.
Cheryl added a science component to the lesson when she asked the children to compare the two avocados. It was interesting to see how the children used different senses to give Cheryl the answer. Sophia smelled the avocados and said, " The dark green avocado smelled more."
Sammie used the sense of sight as she observed that one avocado was darker than the other.
Charlie used the sense of touch and said, " The dark avocado is squishy!"  Then Cheryl explained to the children that the light hard avocados are not ready to eat and the dark squishy avocado was "ripe" and ready to eat. As the children compared the avocados, Cheryl cut them and the children made observations about the size and color of the pit.

Jonah,  Charlie and Max cut the slices of avocado into small chunks and the tomatoes into halves. All the children were so proud when Cheryl complemented them on how skilled they had become with their cutting. In the classroom we have seen how their fine motor skills have grown and as they prepared the salsa we saw the same progress. We have some adept little chefs!
All the avocado slices were cut into cubes and now everyone was busy cutting the tomatoes into halves.
Cheryl added fresh corn to the salsa. Look at all those colors!
Sophia takes a big stretch and exclaims, " We worked hard!"
The children wait patiently to taste their colorful Texas salsa.
