Collage and Stained Glass Art

It's our first day back and the sign in challenge was to create a collage.  There were so many different types, weights and textures of materials.  We were interested in seeing how the children figured out how to make everything stick and in listening to their conversations.
Laura was explaining how she got the pompom to stick, even thought it had many prickly points.  You can see Sophia is listening intently!
Charlie was interested in the small mosaic squares, each side with a different color.  He was very thoughtful in placing the squares so the color he desired was showing.
The finished projects.....We added a literacy component and asked the children to tell us how some of the objects felt and then write that word down using invented spelling.  Come in and see!
We read about Marc Chagall and his stained glass windows.  Then we took a walk to our Temple Sanctuary to see the beautifully colored windows there.  A close look at the windows revealed the designs within each piece of glass and the black metal lines separating the colors.  The kids even noticed how the slate floor was similar, with lines (grout) separating the different colors......and we have to say this is the first year any class has made that observation!
Back in the room each child made their own Chagall inspired art.  We used contact paper, tissue paper and very thin black construction paper strips.  As with all of our art, there is no "right or wrong",   just the individual artist's creative design.
Laura is standing under some of the completed work.  When the sun shines through our  "stained glass" it is really beautiful!
