Exploring The Artic Through Science !

What happens when you mix shaving cream and glue.....This was a very different sensory experience for the children. It was sticky, soft, somewhat soothing, and the room smelled clean and fresh. There were no rules about how to mix the 2 substances on the paper, and everyone approached it in their own way.
Some kids dived right in while others used a bit more caution!
Matthew was definitely not sure if  he liked the sticky feeling.
Jack thought it was great!
Charlie  mixed so quickly he soon covered the paper almost entirely!
Jonah liked making peaks on his paper and found that by standing up he could get them even higher.
Everyone was very intent!
Max's arms and smock were totally covered by the end.
You can't study polar bears in the Arctic without talking about blubber.  We used Crisco (the white substance in the bag on the right) as the blubber.   We asked the children to compare how their hands felt when one was in straight ice and the other in ice, but protected  by the blubber.  Their facial expressions are terrific!
The experiment was a success! The children now know that blubber along with fur protect polar bears from the extreme cold in the Arctic.
