Tu B'Shevat And Math ???

Hooray for trees and Tu B'Shevat!
Sophia and Matthew are making a rubbing of the tree bark  so that the "tree" we put on the bulletin board will look a bit more realistic.  You can see how they had to work together, always an important goal of our projects.
Heidi has very cool tree blocks which she lent to us for the day.  Since building is a favorite activity of our kids, these blocks were an instant hit!
Thanks to everyone for sending in a branch.  We wanted the children to use unifix cubes to measure the length of their branch.  There was  great problem solving going on all morning...how to measure when the branch isn't straight or when it doesn't lie flat...and what about those berries or leaves at the end.  The kids counted and compared and really helped each other.
Once the unifix cubes were in place and the child had counted, it was time to actually write the numeral.
We arranged the unifix cube trains, branches and written numerals from longest to shortest.  Then we made observations about the graph we'd created.

We placed all the cubes  end to end down the hallway.....if the kids laid end to end, would we be longer or shorter than the cubes.  Everyone knew the answer, but there were lots of giggles as we confirmed our guess!
Our final Tu B'Shevat activity was wrapping a pipe cleaner around a  branch.  The kids remembered the wrapping technique we'd shown them when we made our Calder mobiles, and easily applied this new skill.  When you come in the room, see if you can find the branch mobiles.  Special thanks to Tom Bazzone for climbing on step stools and tables to hang them for us!
