Igloo, Polar Bears and Inuits !

Creating the bulletin board outside our room took almost a week.  Each day, the children were learning new concepts about the Arctic as well as improving motor and mathematical skills.  Charlie and Jack are printing with wooden blocks to make our igloo. They are carefully placing prints where the paper is still brown.
Charlie and Lukas are also printing, but it's a bit more difficult because the blank spaces are  not as large. The boys also discovered  that by quickly hitting the block down on the table they could make a loud noise as well as send paint flying.  Guess which way the next group of kids chose to print!!!
Sammie's painting a polar bear by combining ovals and circles.
Another polar bear, looks like it will be quite large!
Jonah finished painting his polar bear's body and head. Now this bear needed some ears!
Sophia has painted her polar bear's body. Hmm...how big should I make the legs.
Matthew is adding snowflakes to his polar scene.
The Inuits (Eskimo people) live in the Arctic and their clothes help them stay warm.  We looked at many pictures of  designs and patterns that the Inuits sewed into their parkas.  The children could chose a straight line pattern...
more of a plaid.....
lines and dots.....
or wavy lines.
Painting on the paper lunch bag instead of a larger piece of paper required the children to  focus on the size of their designs. By using smaller brushes, the children were able to control their strokes and the amount of paint they applied to the lunch bag.
Sophia is adding a face to her star patterned Inuit parka.
To complete our Inuits, we used cotton balls to represent the fur around the  parka hood . Jack is very pleased with his Inuit!
