Morning Sign -In Challenges!

Since the beginning of school, the children sign-in as they enter the room.  In August, they moved their names from home to school. This task seems simple, but it provided the children with the opportunity to see all their names in print.  As the weeks progressed, we have changed the sign- in to provide the children practice with a wide range of skills. This week, we began having the children write the answers to our morning questions. The children listen for the sounds in their answer, and then write what they hear. This skill is phonemic awareness where they associate the sound of the letter to the letter's name. After they hear the letter, they use visual memory skills in order to write the word. We call this skill inventive spelling.  We will send their words home each day, so ask your child to read their words to you.
On Friday, we changed the sign -in to measuring with quarters since "Q" was the letter of the week. We asked the children to guess how many quarters equaled the length of the block. King Ahasuerus counted spaces across the length of  the block before he gave us his estimate. This was a great strategy!
Spiderman applied the same strategy as King Ahasuerus in order to estimate.
Robin, a pirate, and the fairy princess worked as a team to complete the sign in challenge. This was another good strategy to solve the challenge.
Our beautiful fairy princess helped our super hero to measure his block. Who is our masked super hero?
Super girl estimated that she would need twelve quarters to measure the block. Is she correct???
Queen Esther's  estimate was also 12.  She stopped to count how many quarters equal half of the block.  We are very proud of all our children as they all conquered the quarter challenge!
