A Festive Week!

Shelly ordered a luluv and etrog for the children to hold, shake and smell. Everyone had a turn as we sang songs and talked about two of the main symbols of the holiday of Sukkot.
After holding the real luluv and etrog the children were ready to make their own. The children made their luluvs by cutting the paper into strips.  They had to keep control of their scissors as they try to cut in a straight line.
In making the etrogs, the children had to use their hand and shoulder strength to squish two pieces of paper into a tight ball.
Wrapping the tape all around the etrog was  another good way to develop finger strength and coordination. They pushed a pipe cleaner as the last step in making their etrogs.

We want to thank all our parents for shopping for the different root vegetables.  We had read two books to prepare the children for this experience. One was" Talia and the Rude Vegetables" by Linda Elovitz Marshall and the other book was" Eating the Vegetables from A to Z" by Lois Elhert.
Charlie and Laura both brought sweet potatoes. We are planning to do a science experience with the sweet potatoes that didn't get planted.  We will plant the sweet potatoes in jars so the children can watch them sprout the roots which help to hold the vegetables in the soil.
Sammie brought some red potatoes and she is using her muscles to dig deep into the soil.
Charlie planted parsnips and Jonah had a giant turnip! Our sensory table is filled with a great variety of root vegetables.
Jack's  mom brought one of Jack's favorite books to read as we all sat in our "living room ".
We also want to thank Sammie's grandmother for reading to our class.  She read a book about sharks going to build their own homes in the ocean.  The children all said, "that's just like the "Three Little Pigs". It was exciting to hear them as they compared and contrasted the two stories!  We are always happy to have guest readers....just let us know when you want to come!
Friday was the 30th day of school.  What better place for Zero to hang his "clue" than in our Sukkah! The children laughed and asked how Zero the Hero knew we were celebrating Sukkot.
As part of his visit Zero the Hero left us pineapple rings for snack. we enjoyed tracing the shape before we ate our healthy zeroes.
What a busy week of learning!  Laura gave us one last surprise! When she brought in the" Show and Share" bag, we wandered what it could be. We only saw this tall stem sticking out.  Then Laura gave clues. It was the biggest Sunflower we had ever seen ,and a great treat for the letter "S' and the color yellow! We can't wait to see what will come in our "Show and Share" bag next week!
