One little sukkah.....so much to learn !

Last week we made the framework of our sukkah and now it's time to add the fruit.  Max and James David chose the fruit they wanted to trace and cut.   Many of the pieces we are now cutting have different angles, forcing the children to pay close attention and turn their paper frequently.
Sammie has hung her apple.  We reviewed many positional words (next to, between, to the left of etc.)  with the children as they chose where to hang each piece of fruit.
Sophia and Laura made large pumpkins.  Do you think these pumpkins could really be suspended from one string....good problem solving as the girls decided their pumpkins needed to go on the ground.
Here is the literacy component of the lesson.  The sentence strip begins, "In our sukkah we see".   Some children could recall the sight word "see" from previous lessons, and others remembered it as soon as we read the sentence.  Using a pointer and tracking words from left to right is an essential skill for reading which Harriet is demonstrating.  Isn't it great to see how interested the kids are!
Now for the math component.  We counted each kind of fruit and wrote the number by the appropriate picture.  The kids made spontaneous observations about which fruits had the same number, the most, or the least.
A sukkah is not complete without friends.  The final part of this experience was to have the children draw their picture.  We showed them how to draw their arms in various positions such as above their  head as if they were tying fruit, or to the sides as if they were carrying the fruit.  Hopefully they will be able to incorporate this new idea into other drawings!
Now we have 12 smiling friends in our sukkah.  Come in and have your child "read" the complete sentence to you!
