Numbers, Names, and I See.....

We've introduced the correct formation of these two numerals and Jack and Matthew are practicing with wiki sticks (think sticky pipe cleaners!).  Again, it's a different experience to work on a vertical plane.  Getting the wiki sticks to stay on the numeral card requires some finger strength.  The children are also free to use the wiki sticks to make a design on the cabinet......we wondered why so many wound up in the sand filled sensory table until we saw how they were being used to twist around popsicle sticks to support sand castles!
What do you see in our room?  Those "I see _______" sentences have been read out loud, cut apart and then reassembled for each child's portfolio.  This is a good review of the 2 high frequency sight words I and see and also some beginning phonics work too.  Sometime soon we will have a word hunt in the room.  We'll probably add the word "like" from our current sign in too.
Learning to read your own name and that of your classmates is one of the earliest and easiest ways we introduce letters and sounds.  This year's class has so many children with names beginning with the same letter it has been an ongoing challenge for the  kids to read each name.  You can see the matching game we've made.  Once the class gets a bit more practice we will send both  the game and ideas for further challenges home with each child for a night or two.
